Paying the Price: The Many Ways FAMU Students Afford College

  As tuition cost continue to rise across the country, Florida A&M University students are relying on financial aid, part-time jobs, and family support, to pay for school.   Joshua Davis, a senior Business Administration major from California, said his parents cover his tuition and off-campus apartment, but he pays for other expenses through his small business. "My little side hustle now is I do oil changes, breaks, car details. I go to people for services," Davis said. "   A survey of 12 FAMU students found that majority rely on financial aid to pay for their tuition. For living expenses 13 said they rely on aid or parents, while 10 said they work or turn to side hustles. Graduate student Jada Davis said her veteran benefits cover the cost of her courses. “I can still take out loans in the master's program, but right now, I don’t work,” Davis said. Tallahassee the new Wild Wild West

  According to the Tallahassee Democrat's data central analysis, there have been 70 shootings this year, resulting in 19 deaths and 56 injuries. Floridians' right to carry a concealed weapon without a permit law was signed on July 1st, 2023, by Governor Ron DeSantis, creating controversial feelings throughout the state.     Parents Perspective   Xavier Smith, a 24-year-old father of two, moved to Tallahassee, Florida, to escape the violence of Boynton, West Palm Beach, Florida. When he arrived, he found the neighborhood where he stayed was similar to his hometown. The crime rate was very high living on Holton Street (Southside). Within his time in Tallahassee, Smith has lost three friends to gun violence. “ I have a fear of my children going to school or my wife being out because I know how instantly things can go bad, said Smith,”   Smith explains that as a black man with a black family, this becomes his fear daily. People in Florida struggle to afford rent, as the cost of living increases. Floridians look to government officials for answers.

According to Rent Cafe, as of January, the average rent in Tallahassee is $1,500. Researchers state Miami’s average rent for a one-bedroom apartment has increased by 21% since last year. Predominantly a college town, Tallahassee students talk about what this means for them.
