Who is Gabriel Parks ?

 Gabriel Parks is a fourteen year old, 5’11 combo guard who currently plays for Deerlake middle’s school basketball team. Due to his tall frame, Parks is able to see the entire front court and does a great job of getting his teammates involved when being guarded heavily. He has a nice floater for driving inside and can be crafty in tight situations. Parks can be seen most times shooting the three ball. Proven to be a deadly threat from behind line; Parks has extended his range and has made it rather difficult for defenders to decide on how to cover him. His long arms on defense make it a challenge for his opponents to dribble past him; giving him plenty of opportunities to steal the basketball and score in transition. He is a developing two way guard who plays fundamentally and calmly. Parks has the IQ of a high school junior varsity player already and will be a strong asset to any team. This summer he will be playing AAU basketball for the Tallahassee Thunder were he will continue to develop his skills.

Mary Copland, a elderly African-American woman, lives adjacent to the former complex. Behind her tiny, wooden, blue house; construction workers work diligently to redevelop the area. Copland has been living at the corner of Brighton Road and Orange Avenue all of her adult life.  Brighton Road contains only three habitable homes and several severely abandoned houses.  “I’ve been witnessing changes in the neighborhood since the 1970’s,” said Copland.   According to the Tallahassee Democrat's data central analysis, there have been 70 shootings this year, resulting in 19 deaths and 56 injuries. Floridians' right to carry a concealed weapon without a permit law was signed on July 1st, 2023, by Governor Ron DeSantis, creating controversial feelings throughout the state.     Parents Perspective   Xavier Smith, a 24-year-old father of two, moved to Tallahassee, Florida, to escape the violence of Boynton, West Palm Beach, Florida. When he arrived, he found the neighborhood where he stayed was similar to his hometown. The crime rate was very high living on Holton Street (Southside). People in Florida struggle to afford rent, as the cost of living increases. Floridians look to government officials for answers.

According to Rent Cafe, as of January, the average rent in Tallahassee is $1,500. Researchers state Miami’s average rent for a one-bedroom apartment has increased by 21% since last year. Predominantly a college town, Tallahassee students talk about what this means for them. Denise Cooper and Jacobi Nelson, both students of TCC, share their experiences in their apartments.  Denise Cooper - West 10 Apartments  “  I feel like rent is way too high, I could be paying less somewhere. I just moved here from Broward County.
